You can now get bikes worth more than £1,000 through Cyclescheme. How about one of these super commuters?
An update to the Cycle to Work guidance means that Cyclescheme can offer commuter packages over £1000. This excellent development means that many more employees will be able to save on the full value of any bike or cycle to work package. So we take a look at some bikes which you may have had your eye on, but previously, were out of reach...
Brompton Superlight M2L
Any Brompton is an ideal mixed-mode commuter, folding in seconds into a compact package you can take by train or bus. The Superlight design saves weight by using titanium instead of steel for the fork, rear triangle, and mudguard stays, as well as by having lighter wheels. Two-speed gearing makes sense for Superlights, as it saves over half a kilo compared to 3-speed gearing but still provides a practical range for urban use. This Superlight M2L – hot pink optional – tips the scales at just 10.4kg, so it’s easier to carry.

Genesis Tour de Fer 30
Described as ‘expedition ready straight from the box’, the same could be said of this steel tourer’s commuting credentials. As well as mudguards, it has pannier racks front and rear – sufficient for a weekly shop on the way home, never mind cycle-to-work stuff. Hub dynamo powered front and rear lamps mean you need never worry about lighting. Wide range 3x10 Shimano Tiagra gearing will get you up any hill, even with panniers, while the TRP Spyre-C brakes are among the best mechanical discs available.

Whyte Wessex One
This isn’t your standard carbon fibre road bike: the Wessex One is designed with UK conditions in mind. There are concealed mounts so you can mudguard-up for a soggy winter. Sram Force 1 hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable stopping power irrespective of the conditions. The wheels and Schwalbe G-One Speed tyres can be run tubeless with sealant inside, combining the benefits of lightweight, fast-rolling rubber with puncture resistance. Gearing is a 1x11 Sram Apex setup, with a large cassette providing a good range of ratios without the need for a front derailleur.

ICE Adventure
Recumbent tricycles are great fun for any cyclist but can be a game changer for those who struggle with bicycles due to mobility issues. The ICE Adventure has a comfortable, adjustable-angle mesh seat that’s easy to get onto, drum brakes on both front wheels, and wide range 3x10 gearing that you can pedal as slowly as you like uphill as there’s no need to balance! The frame has fittings for mudguards, pannier racks, and lights, and it folds in half for transport by car. Lots of build options are available, include electric assist.

Tern GSD S10
This compact electric cargo bike could replace the family car. It’s no longer than a standard bike, and it partially folds for transport or storage. Yet it will carry two children on the rear rack – small ones in child seats, larger ones using bench cushions and fold-out foot pegs. Even an adult can ride on the rear. Alternatively, it’ll haul 180kg of cargo. Small wheels keep any load low and stable. The frame will fit a second battery, boosting the assisted range up to 220km. It comes with lights, mudguards, and a kickstand.
