Ever wondered how your commuting experience differs to others? Each month we share the story of a real Cyclescheme cycle commuter and ask them questions to sum up their experience from their two-wheeled commute. This month, it's Julia.
Each month we feature one Cyclescheme participant and share their commuting story. From John O'Groats to Lands End, we scour the country for the real cycle commuters who take to their bike each morning. If you'd like to feature on our website, just drop us a line on: socialmedia@cyclescheme.co.uk with "I'm in' in the subject line.
This month we caught up with Julia to see how her commute has changed her life.
Where in the UK are you?
Lancashire
What was your main motivation for getting a bike through Cyclescheme?
I wanted a reasonable quality road bike but couldn't afford a big initial outlay. Getting a bike through Cyclescheme enabled me to spread the cost and save money.
What bike did you get and why?
I got a Trek 1.5 road bike. It was a good spec for the money and I wanted a change from my old hybrid.
How much did you spend on your Cyclescheme request?
I spent £800 in the end including cross top brake levers and essential (I live in rainy Lancashire) mudguards.
How often do you commute to work by bike?
The only weather that puts me off is strong winds or ice and snow.
Where do you commute formand to?
I only live 3.6 miles from work so I usually do a longer commute which varies between 12 and 24 miles, taking in local villages around Pendle Hill.
How has cycling affected your daily life - do you feel healthier? Have you saved money?
I was never particularly unhealthy but cycling gives me a real buzz that no other activity can. Cycling has become a big leisure activity for me too and I have done various long distance cycling holidays including LE JoG and cycling the length of the River Rhine. If I drove to work I would not only be adding to pollution but spending a lot over the year on petrol that can be better spent on cycling holidays!
