Ever wondered how your commuting experience differs to others? Each month we share the story of a real Cyclescheme cycle commuter and ask them questions to sum up their experience from their two-wheeled commute. This month, it's Emma.
Each month we feature one Cyclescheme participant and share their commuting story. From John O'Groats to Lands End, we scour the country for the real cycle commuters who take to their bike each morning. If you'd like to feature on our website, just drop us a line on: socialmedia@cyclescheme.co.uk with "I'm in' in the subject line.
This month we caught up with Emma to see how her commute has changed her life.
Where in the UK are you?
Suffolk
What was your main motivation for getting a bike through Cyclescheme?
To get a good quality bike that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to afford if I'd had to pay it all at once, with the savings made via the salary sacrifice scheme.
What bike did you get and why?
A Ribble Sportiva women's-specific road bike, which I could customise, to my own spec...a world apart from my rusty old mountain bike! Although I'm now thinking of upgrading to a better spec road bike as I can now apply for another Cyclescheme certificate.
How much did you spend on your Cyclescheme request?
I spent £650 on the bike - I already had the accessories I needed.
How often do you commute to work by bike?
On average 2-3 times per week, although not when it's very windy or in ice or snow.
Where do you commute form and to?
My commute is 7 miles, all downhill in the morning so it's all-uphill in the evening!
How has cycling affected your daily life - do you feel healthier? Have you saved money?
I am so much fitter now than I was! Commuting has helped me to gain confidence in riding on the road and this has led to a lot of cycling at the weekends and doing a few sportives last year. My next challenge is a century ride! I have saved money on petrol or bus fares and usually I can get to work quicker on the bike than I can in the car or on the bus, so I save time too.
