A pioneer of award-winning aluminium bikes, race-winning machines and e-bikes for everyone, US company Cannondale has some compelling commuters.

Cannondale kickstarted the widespread use of lightweight aluminium bicycle frames in 1983 with its ST500 light tourer, which stood out from its steel contemporaries due to the fat tube profiles. By using oversized tubes, which are inherently stiffer compared to slimmer designs, Cannondale built a frame that was stiffer and stronger than rival steel ones and yet still very light. Today aluminium is the dominant material for affordable, lightweight bikes right across the industry.

Although Cannondale’s first bikes were touring and road bikes, the company diversified into mountain bikes in the late 1980s, when off-road machines were taking off. These too used oversized aluminium frames, along with innovations including the Super V full-suspension frame, Headshok front suspension, and the singled-side Lefty fork. Kids’ bikes, hybrids, and e-bikes of all descriptions have since been added to the modern-day Cannondale portfolio.

SuperSix EVO Neo 3 

The SuperSix EVO Neo is what happens when you combine a Tour de France stage winning race machine with the electric boost of a lightweight Mahle E-Bikemotion hub motor centred in the rear wheel. The end result is a road e-bike that flattens hills, squashes headwinds, and makes you feel like a super hero. Aluminium road bikes have an often-undeserved reputation for a harsh ride because, lacking steel’s resilience, aluminium has to be built into stiffer structures. But harshness isn’t a problem here. Cannondale’s ‘endurance geometry’ provides a more upright riding position with less weight on the hands. The unusually narrow (25.4mm) seatpost will ‘flex’ more, and the seatstays and fork are also designed to flex slightly, adding comfort on the road. There’s room for wider 32mm tyres if you want to trade up from the 28mm ones fitted. A longer fork offset (50-60mm) provides more toe room, which is useful if you take advantage of the discreet mudguard mounts. A true every-day road bike that’s light, stiff, fast, and comfortable. 

Topstone 2

The Topstone 2 is Cannondale’s aluminium entry-level ‘all road’ bike (aka gravel bike). As such it comes with lightly knobbled off-road tyres that you might want to switch for something slicker if you won’t stray from tarmac. The 40mm width is great for badly maintained roads, however, and big tyres will fit even with full length mudguards, for which there are discreet mounts. The riding position is more upright than a road bike, providing better visibility, and the largely Shimano GRX400 2x9 drivetrain has a gear range that’s more suited than a road bike’s to commuting, leisure riding, and any off-road forays, courtesy of a ‘sub-compact’ 46-30 double chainset and an 11-34 cassette.
