A valuable new service has been launched for members of BikeRegister, the national cycle database.
Bike theft can have a massive emotional impact on cycle owners with many feeling it as deeply as they would the loss of any treasured possession.
Bike owners are often left emotionally affected by their bike being taken, with 81% feeling annoyance, anger and shock according to the latest Crime Survey from the Office for National Statistics.
Bearing in mind the trauma that many bike owners go through when their bike disappears, a valuable new service has been launched for members of BikeRegister, the national cycle database, that allows the general public to message them direct should their beloved bike be seen listed for sale online.
Here’s how the new service works:
- Members can now list their own stolen bike in the BikeRegister Stolen Bikes gallery (Stolen Bikes | BikeRegister). From the gallery, members of the public can then use the ‘Message Owner’ button to contact the owner directly.
- To help with the search for a stolen bike, users can also share details of bikes listed as stolen to their own followers via Twitter and Facebook.
- When a bike recovery happens, owners have the option to publish the good news to social media and have their bike featured in the Recoveries section of the BikeRegister website, which shows the ever-increasing cases of stolen bikes being recovered by police, the public and owners.
BikeRegister is simple and quick to use. The idea is that you register when you buy a bike – so you can include the frame number and other details when you sign up (for free), then mark up your bicycle with a security kit and warning label as a deterrent (for an additional, one-off cost).
When you apply for your bike via Cyclescheme you will be given the option to have your bike auto-registered with BikeRegister when you collect it.
Every police force in the UK uses the BikeRegister database to search for stolen and recovered bikes, so even if you don’t register your bike until after it has been stolen, it will still mean that there is a better chance of you getting it back than if you don’t register at all.
If you’re fortunate enough to get your stolen bike back, you’ll undoubtedly want to do everything that you can to stop it from being taken again.
Taking out insurance offered by specialist cycle insurers such as Bikmo will get you covered and back in the saddle again as quickly as possible.
