Review into the progress made towards achieving the goals of the Gear Change walking and cycling plan.
In May 2020 the government announced that they would be investing £2 billion to support walking and cycling in England. In the past 12 months, cycling in England has risen by 46% - the biggest increase in 20 years.
In 2021 alone, the government has pledged a £338m budget for active travel. This includes the upgrade of the National Cycle Network, new guidance for Local Authorities, an update to the Highway Code and an e-bike pilot programme.
The data clearly shows how the encouragement of cycling could reduce our carbon footprint – the report even suggests that Council funding will be cut if individual areas are not actively supporting the proposed travel plans.
Notably, retail cycle spend is up by 45%, taking the annual total to £2 billion. E-bikes are quickly growing in popularity taking a 12% share of the market – a 67% rise YoY.
